1. First Things
Published by the Institute on Religion and Public Life, First Things is a conservative and heady publication which generally features Christian and Jewish perspectives. This publication includes opinion pieces, featured articles, as well as book reviews in print and online.
Pay: The Guidelines for Submission indicates the following word limits for contents that will be accepted:
- Opinions: 1,000 to 2,000 words;
- Feature Articles: 2,500 to 4,000 words;
- Book Reviews: 1,250 to 1,500 words.
First Things offers an honorarium for writers, but it does not mention any specific amount.
2. The Forward
The Forward covers ideas, issues, and institutions pertinent to the American Jewish community. Its unequivocal commentaries on politics, arts and culture have won for this publication several awards and recognition.
The Forward accepts “trend stories, series, multimedia, and video projects”. Although there was no specific rate mentioned on the site, their page indicates that “the compensation will be highly competitive for the right pitch.”
3. Spirituality And Health
This publication covers a wide range of topics under health and spirituality, which can include:
- faith, Eastern philosophy, meditation, and mainstream religion;
- nutrition, wellness, yoga, and holistic medicine;
- creativity, the inner life, social justice, and issues of conscience;
- public health, the human body, and the environment.
Acceptable article length for submission is from about 500 to 3,000 words. A good range for digital copies is from 600-800 words, on the other hand.
4. Guideposts
Guideposts is well-known for its inspirational personal stories of how individuals “overcame obstacles, rose above failures, handled sorrow, gained new spiritual insight, and became more effective people through faith in God.” The monthly magazine reaches millions with the belief that with “hope, faith and prayer, everything is possible.”
While there is no specific amount paid for accepted content, their website does indicate that it pays for “full-length stories” (this is about 1,500 words).
5. Relevant Magazine
This is a bimonthly lifestyle magazine for Christians in their 20’s and 30’s that features faith, culture and intentional Christ-centered living. Relevant calls itself progressive, but it’s still theologically conservative and targets an evangelical audience.

6. Woman Alive
Woman Alive is a UK-based Christian lifestyle magazine for women. Its contributors’ guidelines specify their current standard rates that start at £70 (about $87) for a one-page article (750-900 words), £95 ($118) for two pages (1200-1300 words) and £125 ($156) for three-page articles (1500-1600 words).
7. Geez Magazine
This quarterly magazine features content that centers on “social justice, art, and activism for people at the fringes of faith in both Canada and the US.” Contributors to this non-profit publication are paid a “modest honorarium.”
8. Christianity Today
Christianity Today is not just an evangelical magazine, but a nonprofit global media ministry that reaches more than 4.5 million Christian leaders each month.
WhoPaysWriters.com reports one of the writers who get paid to write between two and 17 cents per word.
9. Religion & Politics
This publication is a project of by John C. Danforth Center on Religion & Politics at Washington University in St. Louis, and offers political opinions from several religious traditions.
One writer reports through Who Pay Writers.com of earning 26 cents per word for content provided for one of its publications.
10. Purpose
This is a monthly publication by Mennomedia, the publisher for the Mennonite Church Canada and Mennonite Church USA. It features “highly readable, thoughtful curricula, and books” that they believe will inspire its readers to follow Jesus. According to its writer guidelines, this publication accepts “original, personal true stories (450-700 words) and poems/verse (up to 12 lines)” that is relevant to its current theme.
The pay for accepted content, as indicated in the same guideline, are as follows:
- $30 to $50 per article
- $10 to $20 for poetry
